SUPPORTING ADULTS IN DYSLEXIA AND LITERACY: A COURSE FOR TUTORS OF ADULT LITERACY (Level 3)

Accreditation by Surrey Open College Network.

1 DAY PER WEEK for 1½ terms - (15 Weeks)    

This very practical course will equip teachers/tutors working with adults in Adult Basic Education, Further Education or Higher Education, with the skills needed to support learners with literacy difficulties. Delivered by specialist tutors, the course will consist of four units:

  • Adult dyslexia (including screening and assessment)
  • Planning and delivery of a structured literacy teaching programme and discussion of teaching methodology
  • Teaching language, literacy and organisational skills

  • Other issues related to the teaching of adults

Delivery will be through lectures, workshops and the exchange of ideas and experience. Assessment will be by coursework including a Case Study, a Professional Development Journal and a short Seminar.

The course will involve: 75 hours attendance; 25 hours assessment and teaching practice; 80 hours private study (a total of 180 hours).

  •  AN UNDERSTANDING OF DYSLEXIA 

  • PRINCIPLES OF LEARNING FOR LITERACY
  • A STRUCTURED LITERACY PROGRAMME FOR ADULTS ON CD-ROM
  • AN UNDERSTANDING OF HOW LANGUAGE WORKS
  • STRATEGIES FOR HELPING WITH READING, WRITING AND SPELLING
  • STRATEGIES FOR HELPING WITH ORGANISATION, MEMORY, SPEAKING AND LISTENING
  • COURSE MATERIALS

          

TIME:          One day per week for 15 weeks

VENUES:    Currently: Leicester (Tuesdays), Durham (Wednesdays)

AWARD: 

  • Dyslexia Institute Certificate for Teaching Adult Literacy: Supporting Adults  in Dyslexia and Literacy

  • Surrey and Region Open College Network certificate.

  • 6 credits (plus an optional credit) at Level  3  (equivalent to NVQ Level 3)
