PLEASE SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP
A will is an extremely important legal document. We would advise therefore that before making a new will or making any change to
it you seek advice from a solicitor. If necessary you can find a list of solicitors at your local Citizens' Advice Bureau.
Alternatively you may wish to speak to our legal advisor Robin Preston of Rowberry Morris Solicitors at Colne Lodge, Clarence Street, Staines, Middlesex, TW18 4SP. Tel 01784-459955
WHY MAKE A WILL?
A properly drawn up will ensures that you can:
-
say exactly how you want your money and belongings to be dealt with
-
sometimes avoid or reduce the tax that has to be paid when you die
-
avoid unnecessary worry and uncertainty for those close to you
-
remember friends and help favourite charities or causes
WHAT TYPE OF LEGACY?
There are primarily three different types of bequest:
-
a specific bequest of a particular possession - a car, land, house or picture for
example
-
a residuary legacy leaving all or a percentage share of what is left after all your debts, taxes and gifts have been
paid
-
a pecuniary bequest is a gift of a fixed sum of money. This amount may lose its value with
inflation
CHANGING YOUR WILL
It is generally advisable to change your will whenever there is a material change in your circumstances. In some cases it is essential to make a new will.
If you only want to make a small change to a will a document called a codicil can supplement your existing will.
