Opportunities for Adults

Free Tuition

With the help of the European Social Fund and the Learning and Skills Council the  Centre can now offer free tuition for eligible adults. If you live in County Durham, if you work for no more than 16 hours a week and do not have an NVQ Level 2 qualification, and would like to be considered for specialist help, please contact the Centre.

Centre Principal Marilyn Butterworth comments: ' We have been contacted in the past by adults who need help with literacy, and who would really like to take a National Test. It has been disappointing and frustrating that we have not had funds available to do this - until now. We can now offer initial assessment and tuition by specialist teachers free of charge to adults who would like to improve their reading and writing skills'.

A former student contacted Dyslexia Action to state the following:

' What you have done for me so overwhelms me that still, five years on, I need to phone you up and tell you. I was in a wilderness, lost at sea, until I met Jenny (Dyslexia Action National Adult Coordinator). From that time, my life was changed'.

Important Information for Employers and Employees

Are you an adult who suspects that you may be dyslexic? Or are you an employer who has an employee or volunteer whom you suspect may be dyslexic or have other literacy-related difficulties, and would very much like to overcome them?  Are you based in the Tees Valley area or County Durham? If so, please read on.

Dyslexia Action has immediate funding for voluntary sector employees and longer-term funding for employees in all sectors, to cover assessment and tuition towards a basic skills qualification or support through an NVQ. Click here for a leaflet giving further details.

Employers, if you are concerned about whether this could mean loss of wages, please note that wage compensation can now be allocated to organisations employing fewer than 50 employees, to cover tuition hours. Click here for an Employer's ticklist.

If you require further information, please don't hesitate to call us on 01325 283580.
