Based in  Newcastle , this project aims to improve the literacy of youths in the 16-24 age group who may be at risk of committing anti-social behaviour within the local community. It is hoped that an improvement in literacy will lead to greater self-esteem and improved motivation to play a useful part in the community.

The project, which began in March 2004 and will run until February 2006, involves identification of individual needs through a full psychological assessment, the design of and Individual Learning Plan and provision of appropriate tuition. The individual’s progress will be measured on a regular basis and progress tracked on completion of the tuition. Clients will also be helped in their preparation for employment.

The Torfaen Reading Improvement Project (TRIP)                                  Back to top

This project aimed to increase the awareness of dyslexia within the Torfaen LEA by working with the English advisory service to ensure that each school has a ‘dyslexia friendly’ tutor on its staff to help in the identification of dyslexic pupils; to undertake a needs analysis of the specific learning difficulties requiring support within mainstream schooling and to work with teachers and headteachers in supporting such needs. This project took place in 2003-4 but following its successful completion, the DI and the LEA are now working together on a further project to establish a rolling programme to deal with underachievement in literacy across the LEA.
